We went first gear the entire way down, with much prayer. I’m still not sure how I avoided a complete panic attack; I’ve had to crawl part of the way on many rock scrambles (I think Old Rag was the last one) for fear of heights.

30 minutes of yoga, then 30 minutes of Wii fit with Ben. Most of our time was spent moving Stanley the Yoga Cat out of the way; he sees the yoga mat come out, and he wants to lie on it. Plank pose with cathair. Downward dog with cat paw in the way. He finally moved out when we started running in place – his tail has memory.

All are home safely – that’s what matters.

Exercise today was clearing out the “dining room” – really, our sunny, hang-out room. Did ok with the food thing; ate dinner out but had grilled chicken tacos and rice – skipped the beans.

Meditation, then prayer and study on the Proverbs; I’m reading the Artscroll commentary this month.

Wednesday, 5 August

Exercise:
I managed to wrest Ben away from the WII and do Rainbeau Mars’ Pure Sweat yoga tape – in two sessions. I had to take a break halfway through because I was just dying, but I did the whole 30 minutes, plus another 5 minutes of stretches.

Breakfast:
We baked blackberry muffins for breakfast using the berries growing along our driveway.
Lunch:
I cut up a pineapple (ok, not very local, but fresh – not canned).
Mixed up a salad from the wild rice I cooked yesterday, plus a dash of sesame oil, lemon juice, parsley, and craisins.
Snack: tried the yogurt-blueberry smoothie from Ornish’s Spectrum book. Really plain-yogurt pungent, so added some apple juice.
Dinner:
Grilled salmon with a ginger-soysauce glaze – Ben went back for seconds. (OK, it was from Costco, but the label said wild, so I’m hoping it was not farmed)
Edamame
Tomato-basil bread I picked up from Panera.

Meditation/Prayer
Didn’t set aside much time for this today.

Decluttering: Out went the trash and cardboard for the week. Posted some old homeschool books on ebay, and have three more boxes to go to the thrift store.

“If I say it publicly, then I’ll be less likely to backslide.” I’m embracing a vegetarian, low-fat, seasonal diet, and exercise. For real. To try to get back to my pre-wedding cholesterol level and weight. And I’m taking my family along for the ride, though they’re not doing the vegetarian version. I’m going to track it on my blog. Wish us luck! Anyone want to join us?

With two close relatives with history of stroke, and some less-than-optimal test results for me, I’m paying attention now.
The goal: 30-60 minutes of exercise per day, following Dr. Ornish’s low-fat Spectrum plan, 1200-1400 calories, and meditation.

Stats as of 8/3:
Cholesterol: 192
HDL: 44
LDL: 134
Let’s say weight is at 0 and we’ll count up or down to show loss or gain

Goal:
Cholesterol: 150
HDL: >60
LDL: <100
Weight: -20

OK, I try to not get sucked into politics, and I avoid talk radio like the plague, but G. Gordon Liddy’s comments on Sotomayor just were completely, unbelievably bizarre:

LIDDY: I understand that they found out today that Miss Sotomayor is a member of La Raza, which means in illegal alien, “the race.” And that should not surprise anyone because she’s already on record with a number of racist comments.

Can you count how many leaps of logic, as well as racial insults, he makes here? Notice he avoids reporting what “racist comments” she made. He just claims she made them.

Oh, it gets worse:

LIDDY: Let’s hope that the key conferences aren’t when she’s menstruating or something, or just before she’s going to menstruate. That would really be bad. Lord knows what we would get then.

(Listen for yourself on YouTube..)

Eating locally-grown food is the new trend. But it’s more than a trend: it saves on gas (less transport to get the food to you), it helps the local economy, and it usually means fresher food for you. Definitely cool, as we can make a difference globally, locally, and for our own health. In addition, it helps us build community.

Eating the locavore way may mean buying from the farmer’s market (Front Royal’s opens June 18), getting to know your local small farmer, buying a cow share (for fresh or raw milk), or visiting a pick-your-own farm here in the Shenandoah Valley. If you can grown your own, even better: now you can share. If you’re thinking “I don’t even have a yard – how can I do this?” — try container growing. If you want to start with the easiest step, though, grow sprouts.

Here’s what you need: sprouting seeds, a glass jar, and about 4 or 5 days. You can grow delicious sprouts using mung beans, broccoli, radish, lentils, sunflower seeds, or alfalfa — to name a few. (A note of caution for those with autoimmune disorders: some research cautions those with autoimmune disorders such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis should avoid alfalfa sprouts.) To get started, soak the seeds overnight in a bowl. In the morning, drain the water, rinse and place the seeds in a glass jar or sprouter. I keep mine on the kitchen counter, out of direct sunlight, so I remember to rinse them. Rinse and drain the seeds/sprouts three times a day until they are almost ready to eat — about 3-4 days. You may notice little hairs on the roots that look like white mold — especially the radish and broccoli sprouts: this is normal root hair growth.

If you like your sprouts greened up, place them in a sunny window for the last day (while continuing to rinse them three times a day). Rinse, drain, and eat! You can store them in the refrigerator for a few days, also.

You can sprout wheat for a day or two, as well: sprouted wheat makes a nutrient-loaded addition to home-baked bread. Wheat sprouted for 2 or 3 days makes some pretty tasty wheatgrass sprouts for inclusion in salads, or straight out of the container: they have a sweet flavor.
